The PTA tax is important in Pakistan for several reasons:
Fair Contribution: Everyone who uses a mobile phone in Pakistan contributes to national resources through this tax, ensuring fairness regardless of where the phone comes from.
Market Regulation: By taxing imported phones, the government controls demand and supply in the local market, helping local and international brands compete without overcrowding the market.
Economic Benefits: Taxes from imported phones support Pakistan’s economy by funding essential government projects and services.
Support for Mobile Networks: The revenue helps maintain and improve mobile network services like Jazz and Zong, ensuring smooth communication across the country.
Fair Tax System: The tax system is designed to distribute the financial burden fairly among all income groups, avoiding unfair pressure on any one group.
This approach helps create a balanced, sustainable system that benefits individuals, businesses, and the country as a whole.
You can easily check the PTA tax for your mobile device through an SMS by using its IMEI number. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide for pta tax calculator by imei:
Insert a SIM Card: Make sure your phone has a working SIM card installed.
Dial *8484#: Open your phone’s dialer and enter the code *8484#, then call it.
Enter Your Mobile Number: Provide the mobile number associated with your SIM card when prompted.
Enter Your CNIC: Type in your CNIC number (Computerized National Identity Card).
Provide the IMEI Number: Enter your phone’s IMEI number. You can find this number by:
Submit the Information: Click "OK" or send the details.
Receive Tax Details: You’ll receive a reply via SMS showing the tax amount required to register your phone with PTA.
When calculating PTA tax for a mobile phone, keep in mind that the tax amount depends on whether you register the phone using your passport or CNIC (Computerized National Identity Card). Generally, using your passport (especially for phones brought from abroad) may result in lower tax rates compared to using your CNIC.
Imagine you have a phone that costs PKR 50,000. The following rates apply:
Using the formula:
Tax = (50,000 × 0.20) + (5,000 × (1 + 0.17))
Total PTA Tax = 10,000 + 5,850 = PKR 15,850
This means you would pay PKR 15,850 as PTA tax for your mobile phone.

Paying your PTA mobile registration tax online through the DIRBS portal takes under 10 minutes. Here's the complete process:
Visit dirbs.pta.gov.pk and create a new account. Select your user type (Individual). Enter your CNIC or Passport number and verify your email address.
After login, navigate to Individual COC → Apply for COC. Select "Traveled Abroad" if you're a traveler (use Passport), or "Local User" if you're registering with CNIC.
Enter all IMEI numbers for your device. Dial *#06# to display your IMEI. Dual-SIM phones have two IMEIs — enter both.
The DIRBS system calculates your exact tax amount and generates a unique PSID (Payment Slip Identity). Save this number — you'll need it to pay.
Pay using any of these methods with your PSID:
Once payment is confirmed (usually within 2–24 hours), your phone is PTA registered and compliant on all Pakistan networks.
Passport registration is cheaper than CNIC for all price brackets. Here's why and when each applies:
| Factor | Passport Registration | CNIC Registration |
|---|---|---|
| Who qualifies | Travelers arriving from abroad within 60 days | Pakistani residents, local buyers |
| Tax rate | Lower (10–15% less) | Higher |
| Deadline | 60 days from arrival | 60 days from SIM insertion |
| Required docs | Valid passport + arrival stamp | CNIC only |
| Best for | Expats, travelers, overseas Pakistanis | Local buyers of imported phones |
Key fact: Once the 60-day window passes, you can only register on CNIC at the higher rate. There is no extension or grace period.
No. PTA tax is NOT removed in 2025 or 2026. Despite widespread rumors on social media (WhatsApp, Facebook, TikTok), the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has officially confirmed that mobile registration tax remains fully active and mandatory.
The 2025-26 Federal Budget maintained all existing PTA tax slabs. Some budget phone categories saw minor rate adjustments, but the overall system is intact. Any claims of "PTA tax abolished" are misinformation.
